Hyangsu is a project that explores the theme of homesickness. During my first year of college in the Netherlands, I experienced a great level of homesickness for the first time in life which I coped through cooking Korean food. In Korea, we use metal spoons and chopsticks and every time you pick up and place down the metallic utensils, they make distinct clinking sounds. The sounds were a very mundane part of my life back in my home country, South Korea. However, in an unfamiliar setting at that time in the Netherlands, I found a sense of security, familiarity, and warmth in the metallic tones, which I was inspired to create a guide on how to play “향수; Hyangsu: Nostalgia, Homesickness”.
